Just groovinExplicit Faith  drummer Scott McCartney was born in Clarksburg, WV on September 21, 1965. His parents moved to suburban Philadelphia, PA shortly after his birth and joined a local church. Scott’s early years were filled with both the cultural music of the times and the influence of the church choir and cantatas where both of his parents were active. “I remember asking Jesus to come into my heart and accepting Him as my saviour at around the age of 5 while discussing eternity with the choir director and pastors wife. She was an amazing woman, filled with the Holy Spirit. I can still remember her incredible skill as a pianist and her playing remains a blessing in my memory. She had Explicit Faith .”

Piano lessons began at an early age followed by an interest in drums. Around age 9, Scott started tormenting his family with the sonic booms still prevalent in his style today! Drum lessons and experience playing for the school band introduced Scott to many musical influences of the times from progressive, southern and classic rock to jazz, and show tunes. “Music was everywhere back then, the radio was always on! It was an awesome time for learning to play music. Groups like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, were already established while others such as Boston, Foreigner, and Rush were defining their own niche on the airwaves.”

Drumming continued to be an important part of Scott’s life throughout high school, where he was a member of a three-time PA State champion marching band. He also used his God given talent in special church services, although his playing style was more subdued. “I will never forget how after a cantata or performance I would be approached by some of my Sunday school teachers and church elders. They would tell me how much they appreciated my playing. Their words really touched me! They had Explicit Faith !”

In 1996, Scott moved to VA and began taking classes at a local community college. Almost immediately, he met and became close friends with Dustin Landacre. Conversation quickly turned to musical tastes and jam sessions were set up. At times, other musicians would join the jam sessions but nothing ever materialized. Dusty invited him to play his drums at various local churches where Scott met bassist Justin Hedrick. Early in 2007, Dusty called Scott and asked him if he wanted to form a band and play music for the Lord. A meeting was scheduled with Justin Hedrick and guitarist Derek Shreve. Explicit Faith  had been born!
